The University of Central Florida, which opened in 1963, is a comprehensive state-supported university with a strong emphasis on engineering. It has grown rapidly at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels and now has an enrollment of 39,000 students. It is near the Kennedy Space Center, the Central Florida Research Park, Westinghouse, Lockheed-Martin, and other major engineering centers. It is the home of several prominent research institutes, including the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers, the Institute for Simulation and Training, the Florida Solar Energy Center, the Advanced Materials Processing and Characterization Center, and the Florida Space Institute.
